ARIZONA BURN CENTER

The Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center

Although treatment for burn patients had been provided by the Maricopa Medical Center, the Arizona Burn Center was formally instituted in 1965 under the leadership of MacDonald Wood. M.D. With its initial five beds, it quickly became clear that such a facility was greatly needed to fulfill a critical role in the Southwest’s medical care community.

Today, the Arizona Burn Center is the primary tertiary burn care center in Arizona and serves as a regional center for Southwestern United States including Northern Sonora Mexico. Officially designated as the regional burn center for the State of Arizona in 1992 by the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Arizona Burn Center provides inpatient and outpatient care for both adult and pediatric patients. The Arizona Burn Center first achieved ACS/ABA Verification in 2000, and has successfully re-gained this status in 2003 and 2006.

The Arizona Burn Center is a 45 bed facility in which 19 of the beds are intensive care capable. In 2007, the Arizona Burn Center carried an average daily census of 27 patients while treating 902 inpatients and more than 1,500 burn emergency room patients. Moreover, the burn outpatient clinic is open 4 days a week and supervised more than 6,000 visits in 2007. Over the past 10 years, the Arizona Burn Center has had a 96 – 98% overall survival rate.

The mission of the Arizona Burn Center is not only to save the life of the burn patient, but also to restore the patient and their family to the highest level of social, psychological and vocational function. This is accomplished via a multidisciplinary approach using every member of the specialized burn team.

The Foundation for Burns and Trauma is honored to be counted as a partner to the Arizona Burn Center. Our programs provide funding for continuing professional education, burn research, and medical equipment and facilities that may otherwise not be available. We work closely with the Arizona Burn Center staff to identify the children and families that can best benefit from the contributions you provide.

We are proud of the good work done by the doctors, nurses, burn technicians, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, research teams and all the staff of this fine institution and are grateful for the lifesaving work they perform every day.
